Sorry... I have been starting a lot of topics! 8O

I was just wondering... if I plan to start up a new tank using filter media from an already established one, do I still drop a shrimp in to get things going?

Same question about the shrimp for if I want to start a planted tank.

TIA (ha... I am totally catching on to the lingo :D )

Yes for both questions. For cycling with established media, pure ammonia would be easier but a shrimp will do the trick.

i read in a book, that you get instant cycling with a mature filter media and bio-wheel, or bio mechanism.

also you can raid the tank with pure ammonia, with no additive no detergants, and that will cause rapid growth of beneficial bacteria.

i cycled a 5 gal with established media and ammonia, in about 7 days.

Well, the shrimp and the media are in. Now comes the waiting/testing game. Maybe some plants next week... thanks for the advice.
