Deep sand bed

It's fine especially when you have fish burrowing and digging in it. My cichlids love to dig in the sand and I think it's annoying when you can see the bottom so I almost always use a thick sand bed. But occasionally I will remove all decor and plants from the tank to clean and stir up the sand really well.

I'll put it this way... I have a 75 gallon mixed african cichlid tank that has 120lbs of Tahitian moon sand and this weekend I added another 10 pounds to the front portion of the tank. After they did and did and dig I swear it disappears lol.

The front was getting low. I didn't fill there tunnels or anything just added around some driftwood and rocks that started to look bare and placed.

Plus when they move around the bottom they kick some up and I'm sure the filter gets some.

Sorry for the dragged out post. Point is... Go as little or as much as you want IMO.
