I just bought a 2.5 gallon bow front tnak, finally I went out and bought a betta for it, beautiful blue and red long fin betta, I woke up today to find it sucked up onb the bottom of the filter, its beautiful long fins shredded and gone, I thought my tnak had doen its cycling already...wrong!!! I checked the water, ammonia was up to 2 ppm....I feel like such a crappy fish keeper..it really destroyred the respect I ahd for myself as a fish keeper

:(

I should have told you that you'll probably have to turn the filter down. It is very strong for the tank, but that's the filter that can with it. Sorry for the betta :(

Do you have a sponge you can stuff in the space between the bottom of the filter and the substrate? And if the betta was sitting in there for a while, dead, that may be the cause of your ammonia.

I agree with DT the filter may have been the culprit and the ammonia spike was due to the betta's death. I'm sorry for your loss. I don't think you should be too hard on yourself. No matter what level of experience we have as aquarists, we all make mistakes.

A prefilter on the intake (foam, sponge, empty media bag, etc) will help with that. As for the ammonia spike, that's the betta death.
I never had that tank before, but sorry for the loss.

Sorry for your loss. I love Betta's. I agree we all make mistakes and the good thing is e can learn from our experiences. Better luck on the next one.
