driftwood?

i know i looks good and i used to have some in my old tank that i had..

but it became covered in slime and was really nasty... is that they way that it is supposed to be and is that the purpose that it serves??

is it there to help the algea to grow and to help balance the water levels??

can you provide a water result, and size of tank with the stocking? ottos and plecos etc will feed on drift woods.

right now i have a 29 gallon tank,
stocked with.
2 goldfish
3 dainos
1 chinese algea eater

what temp is your water?

from my understanding your goldfish are cold water fish and the others are tropical fish, 2 different water temps species.
the chinese algea eater is good when they are young to help out with algea, after they mature they get lazy.
the goldfish are very dirty fish like the discus they polute the water faster than any other I believe. What are your test results in the water, PH-NITRITE-NITRATE-AMMONIA?
I would recommend the following:
Rinse out the driftwood and check what type of slime it is to then make sure what it is and fix the possible problem that causes this.
you need to get a clean up crew for example:
ottos great cleaning glass and other items diatom algae etc.
pleco look for the smaller ones for your tank
cory's

The slime was more than likely an accumulation of some algae, not really a problem. Kaz is quite correct regarding the goldies and your other fish. They should not be in the same tank.

Goldfish are better kept in a tank on their own, and 2 goldfish in that size tank is overstocked anyway which makes it a high maintenance tank.

All the extra waste from the goldfish is probably promoting a lot of extra algae...

oh and you'd need about 100g worth of filtration on that tank IMO...

if it makes you feel better i have 2 pieces of driftwood (mopani) purchased one week apart and one piece is gross and slimy and the other piece is beautiful. i still haven't figured out why...
