Am I looking for wood that is in a wet creek or a dried up one? Running water or still?

I went into a river for this bad boy

I look around the banks of creeks and usually find some good stuff. We had a huge flood this time last year so there is still heaps of wood washed up high on the bank. Submerged wood is good because it is already water logged and the tannins have leached out already.
