Have a question. For a few days now there has been these weird floating particles in the water, they almost look like dust that is floating in a sunny room. It is also on the surface of the water. What is it? How can I get rid of it?

My water started off with that then I had an alge outbreak! Not sure if they are connected though!! Ill be following to see if anyone can help you with this :)

what kind of surface agitation do you have?

on my tank i noticed that my filter didnt break the surface enough an a biofilm grew on the waters surface.

that often appeared as a dusty surface.

if you stick your finger in the tank do you see a kinda hole where your finger was?

The water is moving around a little because of the filter, and there is no "hole" where my finger was. I don't know what it could be.

hey, if i stick my finger on mine there will be a hole in the water yes
what could it be, its just like you said, kinda dusty or something:confused:

Sorry :( idk what it could be, but you could bring in a water sample with the dust in it to your local pet store for them to test it. I know that Pet Co (at least the one near where i live) does free water testing.

it may be a protein film or biofilm, try a google search using the 2 terms and you should be hit with a wealth of knowledge.

good luck!

if its going to help anyone that have the same problem, here you go!

Causes of Dirty Cloudy or Yellow Water in Aquarium
-Two many fish in small fish tank (stocking)
-New fish tank – not cycled
-Not enough bacteria in the gravel to use ammonia produced by fish
-Fish wastes or ammonia in water
-Not enough water changes
