evaporation
im losing a lot of water to evaporation. i do water changes every 4 days or so but i lose about an inch between each one. is this alright or am i just worrying about nothing. my lights are rarely on for more than 5 hours a day

normal, no worries. if you notice water trickling down the side of the tank... ...worry

its nothing to worry about. surface agitation and exposure to air promotes evaporation. if you really want to slow evaporation then get a cover that completely encloses the top of your tank (like a glass cover) but condensation will collect on it. i actually leave my cover open all the time to increase evaporation since it's always warm/hot here. there's a 3-4 degree difference in temperature with the cover open and closed for me but it might not be so much for you.
