Exploding canister filter

OK, so I thought I could save a buck, and got my father-in-law's old magnum 330 filter for my tank. I did a lot of research, and found out that the 330 has been out of production since 1990. I downloaded the instructions for a 350 (thanks Galerius!) and went from there. I hooked everything up, and viola! explosion number one. It seems there is an o-ring that I convienently left out, and when I turned it off it efficiently siphoned my tank all over me. So I go out and finally find an o-ring, again for a 350, install it, and viola!, explosion number two. Is there anything I can do for a leaky canister filter, or should I suck up the $40 I spent to get the old 330 to work (it needed a filter basket and foam as well as replacement o-rings) and go get a 350?

I think I would not be able to rest at night with that thing holding back the dike! I would go ahead and let BigAlsonline solve this little problem. Coming home one day to bajillion gallons of water on the floor is not a pretty sight, I'm sure! Others would recommend finding a way to fix it, but some things are just not worth fixin...
