External canister filter water changes....

Do you do water changes the same way with an external canister filter as you would a hang on back filter?

Pretty much. I clean my filter with old tank water during water changes too. Just don't forget to shut off the valves on the filter before you disconnect them though....

The water is taken from the tank and not the canister right?

Correct. You should be getting the water through the gravel vacuum/siphon. That way, you're getting the crap that settled before the filter had a chance to get to it. You'll loose a little water through the filter when you clean it obviously, but not enough to make a significant difference.

i use the filter hose to fill up a bucket while im doing my water change... it lets me flush the hoses, then i throw my media in the bucket and rinse it all out while the tank is draining
