I currently have a internal running in one of my tanks but changing to an external tomorrow if I take the media out of the internal and put it in the bottom of the canister would this affect my tank as I know your supposed to leave an old filter in your aquarium till you dirty up your new filter

I think transferring the media to the new filter would actually be more effective than just leaving both hooked up for a while. Keep an eye on your parameters for the first week or so just to make sure something doesnt go amiss and cause your cycle to crash.

Cheers will do
