feeding a bamboo shrimp

What's the best food for a bamboo shrimp? I thought they used their filters with moving water, but lately this guy has been grabbing plants and algae to eat. I'm afraid he isn't getting enough nutrients from the water itself. What can I add or feed him directly? Here's a picture because there seem to be many different species named "bamboo shrimp".

Are you sure he's eating the plants?

I think a good food could be baby brine shrimp, or crushed up algae wafers. He should be able to catch those.

Your Bamboo shrimp will do great on his own,they are filter feeders. No need to worry about it finding food. I hardly see mine but he`s molting regularly.

I give mine zooplankton, phytoplankton, daphnia, and cyclop-eze. They will also get leftover food particles on the substrate.

well he's not exactly eating the plants, but he seems to be brushing them through his filter claws in order to find something to eat. This is the first time I've seen him do that since I got him a few weeks ago. I'll try the brine shrimp and algae wafers - the only problem is that with tiger barbs in the tank, all the food gets eaten up before it even touches the bottom of the tank.

MaryPa - are you sure I don't need to feed it directly?

Most fish shops carry the first three, usually as frozen, but I have also been seeing freeze-dried daphnia (Nutrafin, I seem to recall) on shelves recently. The Cyclop-eze is fantastic stuff (and ideal size fot your shrimp), but a bit more expensive than most freeze-dried foods, and also a bit more difficult to find....you can buy it online directly from Argent Labs, or some more specialised LFS shops carry it...especially those that carry marine supplies/fish.

The zooplankton and phytoplankton should be in the marine section in bottles. Mine is from Kent. The daphnia and cyclop-eze are in the freezer.
The cyclop-eze also comes in a powder form.

well i dont think youll need to actually feed them. mine use to walk around picking up flakes and stuff when it got hungry. or it would stand on a plant or something and eat some stuff outta the water.

My Bamboo shrimp stays hid and I only see him when I do water changes. He`s a filter feeder so no need to worry with special foods or feeding directly.

i haven't had luck with them in my community tank I got one and it moulted once and then died and then another one did the same thing

I've had mine for about 9 months and molted many times. It's in a community tank and I just feed them flakes and he'll be in the filter flow catching flakes. Other times I just see him going around picking up gravel and moving it around eating stuff off the bottom. I recently saw one of my vampires doing the same thing.
