First post - Brackish question
Hi all
This is my first post and my first day as a member here at aquarium advice :P I have a 100 gallon long freshwater that has had a small shortnose gar in it for around a month. I was at the [acronym:836d11b1f1="Large polyped Scleractinian (stoney) coral"]LPS[/acronym:836d11b1f1] the other day and they had a freshwater moray eel - and so I got him !!!!! I did some reading and spoke with the people there and there should be no problem of them living together in my tank ... They have been together for almost a week and have shown no aggression torward each other at all - thank goodness !!! Anyway I have also read that both these fish prefer brackish water but I have no clue on how to set this up and if this would be the best thing for my fish. Also, anyone know of any free floating plants that would look good and do well in a 100 gallon brackish tank? Thanks for the help and I love the forums on this sight !!!!! |

Welcome to AA, bludlust!! [/center:959ffeefe6]VERY SIMPLE!! You need to get some Marine grade salt, regular aquarium salt will not work and a hydrometer. Start adding salt slowing (over a couple of weeks). You will need to give the bacteria in your tank to convert. As for brackish plants, check this thread out: http://www.aquariumadvice.com/viewto...289&highlight= Granted, it's not much of a discussion. Between the bag of salt and your hydrometer, you will be able to tell how much salt to add. I once posted how much salt we added to our tank, but I can't the post |

aquarium salt and brackish fish. you should get a hydrometer too, so you can check the salinity level and keep it stable.

It takes around a cup of salt/5gal to raise the [acronym:fe12adb100="Specific gravity"]SG[/acronym:fe12adb100] .005. You must not raise the [acronym:fe12adb100="Specific gravity"]SG[/acronym:fe12adb100] more than .002/weekly water change. It will take some calculations to figure out how much salt you will need to replace whatever you remove during a water change & how much more salt it will take to raise another .002, until you reach your desired [acronym:fe12adb100="Specific gravity"]SG[/acronym:fe12adb100]. After that, it's easy. These are rough estimates, so you will still need to check with your hydrometer when you're done.
