I am new to the hobby and am in the process of stocking my first freshwater tropical tank. I have seen numerous recommendations which suggest reading up beforehand and taking a fish guide to the store.

Does anyone have recommendations as to quality fish guides or fish books?

Kudos to you for being proactive and learning about your options. Nowadays I use my phone to look up information before making a purchase. However, two good books I use as reference are: Aquarium Fishes of the World, Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod, et. al., and Dr. Axelrod's Atlas of Freshwater Aquarium Fishes, 10th edition. Both great books, but not the type lite enough to carry around.

I have about 40 to 50 more books in my library, many of them very outdated. Another great book I still use is Aquariology, Fish Anatomy, Physiology, and Nutrition, Dr. John B. Gratzek, et. al. Excellent book.
