I think it looks like a spotted bass but wasn't sure.

Some kind of sunfish for sure. Looks young so it will be hard to determine an exact species.

It's a spotted sunfish.

I have a few of these ranging in size, none quite as colorful as the photo i linked from nanfa.

What would you think I would need to keep him alive in a 55g till he gets a little bigger so I can put him in a large pond?

Just keep him from getting killed by other fish and that's it. They are tough fish that eat flake and pellet readily. They also recognize people pretty quickly and will beg for food.
