Hi. I have a fluval 405 canister filter and I was curious if I have to put carbon in a bag or can I just put it in without one?

It's pretty much personal preference. I run carbon sometimes but it's used for removing meds or odors. I don't think I have any carbon running right now, just alot of biomedia. :-D

I'd put the carbon in a bag unless it's directly below a sponge or filter floss or something.

Most folks here don't run carbon but if you decide to use it then put it into a media bag. They can be purchased for around a dollar at your local pet store.

I personally don't use carbon and pack all my trays with Fluval's Biomax.

In most cases carbon is optional. I only use it to remove medications. Presently my 405 runs with 3 trays of bio media and a tray of water polishing pads.

And your tank doesn't stink. How often do you change the water? How much?

I change do a pwc of about 20-30% every week and my tanks don't smell either. lol
I do a filter cleaning every month and rotate months on and off carbon. Works for me. :-D
