I got 2 German rams yesterday. I asked for a male and a female. The one I got is definitely male but this one confuses me. Is it male/female.
I would really appreciate quick replies as I need to get females today if both are males. They don't come around often where I am so I must get while they have.

@CoralBandit can you assist?

From what I understand the Female chooses her mate.just having a M&F pair wont make them a mating pair.you would need to observe the tank & a true pair will follow one another around in the tank.

It's a male in the photos...
When all other tells fail look to size of fish overall.
The females will be smaller.
If all the fish at LFS are really close to same size it is likely they are all the same sex...
Look for STRONG red belly.
That is a good sized ram there...

It is funny the @coralbandit would have notified me if you were on my other forum ,but that is not a feature here...:nono:
I was just checking back here for follow up on other post...

Behavior is really one of the best tells with rams...
If they are male female you will see it quickly IMO.
If they are on opposite sides of tank they the same sex usually...

I've read that blue in the dark spot means female, but the expert on the matter is CoralBandit, I believe

The blue spot and taller dorsal spikes are the weakest tells to go by...
This fish is perfect example of it not being correct IMO...
My tell on this fish besides looking big is the anal fin....
If it easily reaches or passes the base of the tail then it is often male...

No expert here ,I just stare at about 300 of these fish 2 times a day at least...
They sure eat well!:brows:

:thanks:

Tnx @CoralBandit. I assumed it's male I just had a feeling so went and got two certain females. Separated the ones I had into 2 different tanks and added females. His behaviour changed immediately. Flirting with the new babe and fighting with the other male in next tank. So now I have 2 males two females. He still a bit smaller than the other male. Which is a beautiful specimen but won't keep still for me to take a pic

Very nice!
I have many side by side tanks with pairs of same fish next to each other.
Use something to block at least the back half of where they see each other so they can get away visually...
I always feed where they can see each other and that is most interesting...
They are always so jealous of who gets fed first...
Add frozen blood worms and you will see eggs in no time...

Tnx I was going to ask some advice
