Yes, they need a large tank setup just for fancy goldfish. IMO this means something in the 55-75 gallon range so there is room for friends, but something like a 30 gallon for two is bare minimum. They love to dig in the substrate, so sand is ideal. They need lots of filtration, big frequent water changes, and very high quality sinking pelleted food (not Wardley or Tetra, I only feed and recommend New Life Spectrum). They love a well aerated tank and playing in bubbles, so a good air pump is ideal.
