Going to canister

Can I use a canister filter on this tank? I have a whisper 40i because the water doesn't go to the top and this filter suctions to the side. But it sucks as a filter so I want to upgrade to a canister. Seems to be some sales on Amazon right now. Can I use a canister on the tank? As in will the suction be ok, reach the water? An suggestion on canister type is welcome also

I would think you could........why isn't the tank filled up all the way?

There are 2 newts and 3 fire belly toads living on islands up top.

I see. Then, if you could find a canister with long enough hoses and short enough spraybars, you could use one. However, I'm not sure if it's really necessary.
