Ordinary koi are going for over 1 million yens, the record apparently is 13+million. (1/4 mil US). No wonder they need the fancy names!

I found a great site with koi pictures..Lots of pictures, but has their names too. The names basically describe their color in Japanese.

HAHA! I think he meant 13MM yen, or $250K USD. That's still crazy, but given that some people will pay $1K+ for an ounce of sturgeon eggs it's not out of this world. I guess if ya got it, flaunt it, right? .

G! Conversion says 13 millin JPY is just under 160,000 USD. Madness. If I had that much money for a fish, just imagine the tank I could afford to put it in...Wow..

It's really amazing the variations they have developed over time. I wonder if they have a Westminster Kennel Club kind of event for koi? lol

I didn't know there were so many different variations, but it makes sense. And it seems like the names are basically saying White fish with red spots and a little black, and then just listing the combinations of variable colors and patterns. We should use it for goldfish and sell them for truckload of money.

There are hundreds of koi clubs in the US & Canada & members do bring their fish for shows. It is a big thing in Japan ... The All Japan Koi show is prob the "world championship" event:
