I just purchased a 55 gallon tank and the guy at the pet store recommended adding the biomax cylinders into the HOB filter. Just add a little into the bottom of it and he said it would aid in the bacteria generation / effectiveness.

Is this crazy? Or for real? The concept sounds, but it this true?

It won't actually make bacteria grow faster, just give it more area to colonize.

It will give the bacteria another surface to colonize. Bacteria population will only increase to the bio-load of your tank. I guess to answer your question. It won't improve the performance per say. Just give more area to grow.

It will improve the performance in that when adding new fish after your cycle the biomax will allow the system to "catch up to" the newly increased bioload easier than alot of other surface areas.
