Gouramis and Angel Fish
My boyfriend wanted me to ask ya'll a few questions for him.
He has a 29 [acronym:799c455eed="Gallon"]gal[/acronym:799c455eed] with a medium Angel Fish and two Neon Blue Gouramis. He is curious if there is more of a top dwelling fish he can add to his tank. Because those three hide and his tank looks empty. Im aware those fish are semi-aggressive and the angel fish gets stressed fairly easy with other types of fish (or so Ive been told). What else could he put in there that would work fish and size wise? I think he kinda wants a small "community" type fish or something. Also, he wanted me to ask you about Puffers. Now, I know ive asked about puffers before and im sorry if my next question makes you smack ur forehead and go "Gosh, ive told this girl a 100 times.." He wants a puffer. He wants to know if he can put a medium puffer with those three fish. And if not, would a couple of dwarf puffers work? I wouldn't think a medium puffer would work, but possibly the dwarf, but that could upset the angel fish. But, I said I would ask for him. Thanx in advance =o) |

lyquidphyre...
Hatchetfish will do reasonably well with Angels and Gouramis and they spend virtually all of their time at the surface of the tank. Since Hatchetfish are true 'flying fish' it is VERY important to keep them in a covered tank at all times...otherwise you'll find them on the floor in no time. Puffers are NOT good tank-mates for Angels and gouramis. All puffers, including the dwarf puffer, are fin-nippers and the long fins of the Angelfish and the extended ventral fins (look like feelers) of the gouramis would probably be too tempting. The dwarf puffer isn't as bad as the other types of puffer but personally I wouldn't trust them either.

I agree on hatchet fish for top-dwellers. Silver hatchets or marble hatchets, either would work, the marbles stay about an inch, the silvers maybey a bit over 2 inches. If he decides to get Hatchets, a very tight hood is a MUST. they are jumpers and will end up on the floor if given any space at all to get out of the lid/hood.
Also agree 100% with Fruitbat on the puffers, he hit it dead-on. |

Neon tetras and glow-light tetras are two fish that stay less than an inch and school. They're suitable for smaller tanks. I keep 5 neons in a 3 gallon on my desk at work.

I think we might end up buying a small tank especially for puffers =o)

Nope, im a poor college student. I don't spend all my money on fish but I find good deals when I can and get the fish I want when they are on sale and what not.
Besides, a small tank set up is only like $30
