Are heater guards important ? What is the chance that a heater with side mounts on the tank will get dislodged and strike the gravel below ?

Thanks.

Vijay

it's not so much the heater striking the gravel as it is fish purposefully smashing into the heater, sometimes repeatedly, causing it to break

also, some algae eaters like to lay on the heater because it's warm, but they're not smart enough to realize it gets VERY hot and can burn them

No this is really a cichlid issue as they get big and aggressive. Some brackish fish and saltys can cause this trouble as well. Bettas are just simple peaceful fish with funny attitudes. They aren't tough enough to destroy a heater.
