Heater question

So I have a elite 200 watt heater my temp on my thermometer says 80 degrees my elite is set to 72 degrees and is still turning on what should I believe my heater or my thermometer

Why would they be that far off

Not sure. My elite doesn't have number dial, so I have to turn the knob until it reaches the right temp. It might be using power to heat the maximum 40 gallons (assuming it can heat tanks up to 40gallons) to 72.

Thermostats on heaters can be way off, never go by the dial.
