Help Big difference in PH between LFS and new tank
I just purchased 3 angels to go in my 30 gallon (no other fish, but cycled). The [acronym:83db61019a="Local Fish Store"]LFS[/acronym:83db61019a] [acronym:83db61019a="power head or Measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions, depending on context"]ph[/acronym:83db61019a] is 7.0 mine is 8.0. Should I do anything special to acclimatize the fish? I couldn't believe the difference between their water and mine.
Mine [acronym:83db61019a="power head or Measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions, depending on context"]ph[/acronym:83db61019a] 8.0 [acronym:83db61019a="Carbonate Hardness"]KH[/acronym:83db61019a] - 300 [acronym:83db61019a="General Hardness"]GH[/acronym:83db61019a]- 25 [acronym:83db61019a="Nitrite"]NO2[/acronym:83db61019a] 0, [acronym:83db61019a="Nitrate"]NO3[/acronym:83db61019a] 40 Theirs: [acronym:83db61019a="power head or Measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions, depending on context"]ph[/acronym:83db61019a] 7.0 [acronym:83db61019a="Carbonate Hardness"]KH[/acronym:83db61019a]-80 [acronym:83db61019a="General Hardness"]GH[/acronym:83db61019a]-300 [acronym:83db61019a="Nitrite"]NO2[/acronym:83db61019a] 0 [acronym:83db61019a="Nitrate"]NO3[/acronym:83db61019a] 20 My ammonia is zero, didn't test theirs. So these fish are floating in their bag right now - I have stuff to bring the [acronym:83db61019a="power head or Measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions, depending on context"]PH[/acronym:83db61019a] down but I've heard that that is a loosing battle. Any advice?? Carolyn |

Do not use products that reduce [acronym:ad5d1c8787="power head or Measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions, depending on context"]PH[/acronym:ad5d1c8787].
Follow the steps as described at this link and you should be fine. http://www.liveaquaria.com/general/g...ral_pagesid=19 hth |

I most wholeheartedly agree - slow acclimation is a must and they will probably be just fine in your alkaline water. I don't know if they will be able to hatch out any eggs in that water, but they'll do fine.
Kudos to you for testing your [acronym:82c4f7ae3e="Local Fish Store"]LFS[/acronym:82c4f7ae3e] water (rather than taking their word for it) and comparing beforehand.

Thanks all. I didn't touch the water, and just did a slow acclimatization. The angels look fine this morning. I may be able to solve my [acronym:888b3e3dd6="power head or Measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions, depending on context"]ph[/acronym:888b3e3dd6] problem in the future, I'm adding plants and may do a [acronym:888b3e3dd6="Do it yourself"]DIY[/acronym:888b3e3dd6] co2 system. I've read that this lowers [acronym:888b3e3dd6="power head or Measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions, depending on context"]ph[/acronym:888b3e3dd6] substantially.

The [acronym:c37599d65a="power head or Measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions, depending on context"]PH[/acronym:c37599d65a] of your tank will come down naturally Carolyn. It's the result of waste being produced by your fish and the nitrifying bacteria established in your tank.
Your fish will be just fine in a [acronym:c37599d65a="power head or Measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions, depending on context"]PH[/acronym:c37599d65a] of 8. |
