I have this oil-like film on the surface of the water, and one of my 5 guppies died, what is this film? How do I treat it?

How's your water/surface aggitaion?. I gave up trying to fix it and bought a small surface skimmer, works like a magical film remover.. actually that's exactly what it is minus the magic part. .

I get it in 1 of my 5.5 gallon, too. I agree, it's b/c the surface needs more agitation.

Just lower the water level in your tank so the water cascades like a waterfall into the tank. This will fix the problem. Another thing is having a protein layer on the surface of a tank probably was not the reason your guppy died.
