Here's a strange question...

How would fish react to being fed sugar, and, possible side effects?

I agree, that is a weird question. You are speaking of raw, commercial sugar? If so, then no, no sugar. Fish get their sweets from the variety of foods they eat such as fruits.

Why do you ask?

No reason in particular, just thought i'd ask the question. I've always wondered. I know how people react, i know how other animals react i just wondered if anybody had any 1st hand knowledge on how fish react. Humans should get their sweets from the variety of foods they eat such as fruits too...

That is interesting. I imagine any sugar they did get, they wouldn't eat. Or would dissolve into the water before they got a chance to eat it, then it would be a question of how dissolved sugar in the water will effect their breathing ability and gill operations.

There was a post on a canadian reefing board i am on about adding sugar to the water to get rid of nitrates. Don;t know if it would have the same effect with freshwater.

I would expect a major, sudden bacterial bloom. The tank would probably get a bit cloudy until the sugar was all consumed and the bacterial bloom crashed.
