Rule of thumb is about one pound per gallon, or sometimes a little more.

Try the sand bed depth calculator at the top of this page....click on the "Calculators" link.
Ten pounds of sand in a ten gallon tank would give you a bed depth of less than one inch. Thats fine for most applications unless you want a planted tank. For a good 3 inch bed (or so) youd need around 35 pounds of sand in the same tank.

I usually go with about 1 and a half pounds per gallon. Made a good 3 inch bed or so in a cichlid tank... until they reorganized the decor to their own liking
