It generally removes color tints [ Like..the Yellow from driftwood ] from the water.
it also absorbs medications and some contaminates. Of course, after its been in the tank for about 6 days it looses its affectiveness and stops absorbing.

and it does but after a while it will leach out the meds and color if you leave it out for a while i generally use it after i cycled my tank. it just keeps the water that much more clear. but mine lasts for about a month then i notice that it starts to leech out.
