how often should I change the heater?

my heater is a year old, how often shoud I change them out even "if" they look like the are working?

I haven't changed mine and my tank has been running for 2 years. I do have backup ones ready to go though. I just do a visual inspection and I'd all checks out and it's keeping the temp then were good IMO.

Only when they break!!!. No need to change one until then. Buying a good heater, suitable for the tank size, is the best way to stay out of trouble. A smaller heater is going to be on constantly, increasing the chances of it breaking/wearing out or jamming on. Keep a second termometer inside the tank(glass tube types) and monitor it. Having a spare heater is always a good idea. I had a heater for over ten years!!!....
