how often should i clean my filter out?

and also how often should i replace my fluval polishing pads, do the same rules apply to polishing pads only throw them away when there falling apart?

In every tank I own the sponges and media are rinsed with tank water every two weeks, most are canister filters. I don't use polishing pads in any of my canisters, but they can be rinsed or disposed of after contamination. Even cheaper that polishing pads is filter floss that can be purchase at craft stores.

I rinse mine out monthly. I reuse the sponges until they fall apart. I change floss weekly.
