I bought a nano tank with a back filter it's designed for a betta ( I'm guessing) holds about 1/2 gallon of water is there anything I could stock it with besides a betta ( oh the top is open -- no lid

Please don't put a betta in there. The little tanks like that are sold mainly to make a quick buck rather than house a pet. As was said, no fish should go in it. Would it be possible to take it back and get something else? Obviously it'd take more space but a 5 or 10 gallon tank would be your best bets for housing anything.

No I can't take it back. This store is going out of business I kinda like the shrimp idea though.

Half a gallon isn't very much room for shrimp, especially if you get red cherry shrimp and they breed. If it were me I'd cut my losses and use it as just an empty container rather than a tank.

Agreed! It's like putting a human in a 2x2 room
