If you were me (Stocking Decision)

Heyas.

I'm at a crossroads, and wanted some advice/opinions. Hope you're all in a talktative mood today.

I've 4 rummies atm, and was wondering about either growing that school, up to maybe 8, or perhaps getting another small school of some fish that are more middle/upper area of the tank. Would two schools of 4 or maybe 6 fish be just as happy as one school of 8?

As it is now, the rummies like to stay on the bottom, where my cories and otos are, and the angel is the only fish that stays in the middle much at all - which means is he's the most visible. This is fine with me, but I'd love something else swimming around in the middle also. Suggestions for middle schooling fish?

Also, if I went with 8 rummies, I'd then go with one other 'show fish', or perhaps a couple, such as a dwarf gourami group. . .

thoughts?

I'm with you cJw, I'm getting 2/3 dwarf (red) gourami's to complete my 30gal. I know exactly what you mean about eliminating the appearance of "empty" tank" sections. The suggestions posted by other members about the gourami's (plus my wife observing pics) have sold me.

Do you have a plan for sexes, or just w/e? I'm kind of in fear of spawning gourami/angels so I'm not quite sure how I could get a group that would be nice w/ everyone, including each other.

Perhaps a few livebearers instead of dwarf gourami? Endlers ? Fancy guppies? Hrm... extra fry = live food for angel? :evil grin:

Anyone remember where I saw a chart that showed which sections of the tank certain fish species preferred to swim in? (wow, crazy sentence)

From what I've read, sexing may be a bit difficult. One reference mentioned using a magnifying glass to look at anal fins...LOL. I don't intend on breeding...just my luck I could wind up with all same sex.

I do recall something about a normal level chart, though I only recall seeing it in text.

I thought w/ gourami, it was fairly easy? Dorsal fins on males are pointed, fems are founded. . . dwarves are not the same? (or are you referring to angels?)

Wrong gourami - Pygmy, not dwarf. Thanks for the correction.

pygmy gourami? I'll have to look into that - a Sparkling Gourami, perhaps?

i have 3 dwarf gouramis in my tank, but two of them are females (not very pretty) i was thinking of getting two more males. So far they get along really good with the angels, but my angels are really small, im waiting for them to get bigger and i hope to eventually wind up with one breeding pair.
