When setting up my 55g tank, should I add the sand first, then water? Or water first then sand?

I don't think it really matters, but I would add the rinsed and washed sand first.
Either way, you are still going to have to smooth the sand around the bottom the way you want it once the aquarium is full

I would add the sand first, then water. Otherwise the water will splash up on you when dumping in the sand. Just make sure it is clean.

I agree adding the sand first is less messy.

Also, the sand is going to displace the water... so if you fill it up with water first, you might not have enough room for all the sand you want
