Is it okay to have gravel on eco-complete?

I plan on buying a Flvuel Edge 6G. I was looking at plants/gravel/EC and this question came across my mind, it might sound very stupid but

Can you put sand/gravel above eco complete?

Because most of the youtube set up videos I have seen did not have them on it. So i was wondering if thats okay to do it.

You can put sand on but it will eventually start to go under your EC and look patchy, I personally don't like it.......

It's not really recommended, because when the eco breaks down and needs to be changed the extra substrate makes it a real pain.
