I have had an established 37 gallon tank for over a year with weekly water changes and regular testing of the water parameters. I just bought a used 55 Gallon tank that has been empty for about 2 months. Would I be able to move over my filter and sand from the 37 to 55 to keep them "established" or do I need to do the entire cycling again? I will be adding an additional new filter and some extra sand to the 55, but I was just wondering if the stuff I do move to the 55 would keep everything in balance.

Thanks for all advice given!

Just run the old filter on the new tank with the new filter for about a month and it should establish the new filter. The old one will instantly cycle your tank.

I also do this when I need to change a filter pad. I had one that was just falling apart so I took one of my filters from another tank and ran them both for a month. No mini spikes in cycle.

Well that's good news. My 37 gallon has been running so smoothly for the past year with no issues, minus a touch of ich back in the beginning. I plan on moving everything; decor, sand, some water and filter over to the 55 so hopefully I should be good to go in about a month.

I would put the fish gently into bucket/s while you move everything so you don't stress them out. Just submerge your heater in the bucket.
