i received three java ferns in the mail today . . . i start reading about them and have questions. is it absolutely necessary to plant them on wood or rock? i have a 75-gal tank and have no rocks or wood. i'm pretty sure when i bought them from drs. smith and foster they were touted as being "easy" to grow.

You can plant them in your substrate, but be very careful to not bury the rhizome the rhizome is the basically the base of the plant, it looks like a tube. The rhizome will rot if it is buried in the substrate. So basically just bury the stringy roots.
