Another quick and simple question from a newbie. I know the type of fish effect this but in general how many hours a day should I set the light to be on in my acquarium? 20 gallon tank with a single bulb.

12 hours on and 12 hours off is fine. In the beginning, you can shorten this to 10 hours (to deter algae growth...it will grow but not overtake the tank).

Agreed. Some say that lights only need to be on when viewing, but I am not a fan of that advice. Fish need light to promote their coloration and overall health.
