You can but I would assume you'll have a slightly 'shaded area' on either side of you tank.You could keep some lower light plants towards the sides of your tanks and higher light toward the middle. Of course you will only have 6" or so of less light on each sideso it wouldn't be a drastic dropoff in light.
With that much light you will need to run co2.
Also are the bulbs actinic or a fw plant bulb(neighborhood of 5000-10000k)?
 
Maybe if you lifted or hung the light a few inches over the top of the tank you might get some better coverage (I think we're assuming your 55g tank is 48" long).
 
Is the 2X96 a store bought fixture or DIY? If it is DIY (such as AHSupply.com) then you could stagger the bulbs for better coverage. It is not the best solution but it might help get more light to the sides of the tank.
