I have a species tank, and I have cherries in my big tank, with 11 large rainbowfish. I started the tank with just the shrimp (and a large amount at that) but the adults seem to be safe, and I have recently started to see juvies out and about undisturbed. I do get a good laugh watching the fish chase the shrimp sometimes though, and do occasionally see one get picked off. My adults have also started being out and about all the time now, although when the fish first went in I went for a few weeks thinking I only had 6 or so left of the 80ish I started with. That's definately not the case, they are just really good hiders if they want to be.
If you were able to get ahold of a good quantity, it might be worth a try. RCS you can get for a buck a piece easily, so while a little costly, they're not bad. They're proficient breeders, so if some full grown adults can get in the tank and survive, there's enough hiding places, you could see your population grown.

I have Ghost Shrimp in my 55 gallon. Given enough hiding spaces, the population will reach an equilibrium. My tank is planted so there are lots of hiding places. Every once in a while I will see a new shrimp make an appearance.
