Can I just take the sponge and put it in an established tank until I am ready to use the sponge filter? Or do I need to have it running?

You really should run the sponge filter in order to establish it. By just placing it in your tank, it will grow some bb but if you plan on using it elsewhere in the future, I would opt for running it instead to grow more bacteria.

Stick it in the back of one of the filters on the established tank.

ETA: Wait, I see you mean a sponge filter.

Yes, like jlk said. Run it.

if it's taking up room in the tank you might as well run it. connect a air stone, and let it oxygenate the water
