My local WalMart is officially out of the live fish business. They took out all their tanks a while ago, and now they also quit selling bettas in cups. I have to say that I am glad about this. This particular store did not do a good job at keeping their fish healthy and there were no specialist employees available for customers to direct their questions at.
Just thought I would share. :)

Yippee! Sorry! Don't want to offend anyone here who shops there but they had no business selling Fish! IMO

It's the same way @ my walmarts here too! I hate taking my 10 yr old to the fish aisle cuz it never fails there's always multiple dead fish in the tanks that look like they've been dead for days if not weeks and other fish are eating on the carcasses!!!! So Gross and she freaks out cuz she loves fish! But I haven't been in one lately to see if theyre still selling fish

I agree. I know that every store if unique, but this particular one was not good. Its a small town, so PetCo and an lfs are the only places left to get fish. PetCo has its drawbacks, but it is certainly better than this WalMart was.

Yeah no doubt! I dont even live in a small town and our fish selection around here sucks! But plenty of petcos and petsmarts and I don't even buy fish from them anymore!! They would usually die within a week, So I guess when it comes to fish I'm pretty much sol!!

I was going to say- if they ran their fish dept. like the ones around here, it is a blessing to the fish!

Yep.
And, just for the record, I do not have anything against chains, I simply like for the fish to be well cared for and this particular store was not doing that.

I agree 100% it seems to me that they should do some training on the people who work in these fish depts and at least teach them the basics of fish keeping, IMO.

Sure makes me wonder if some of the fish from there stricken with some ailment of some sort actually come in from the supplier like that or do they actually contract it there due to the fish keeping or lack there of?

Walmart uses the same fish suppliers as allot of your LFS. The biggest issue is associates are not told how to care for the tank system and they pretty much just feed and top off the tanks, pretty sure allot of them die from ammo burns.

You took the words right out of my mouth... And I always remember getting fish there when I was growing up ( not knowing better/ just being a kid you know ) and being upset to find the new fish I spent my chore earnings on plus the rest of my tank dead too! I only buy like decor rocks there and that's about it !

Yours may not but mine uses african NW which is the same company some of the LFS in the area use.

Here's what I do k ow about WalMart- several years ago, they began pushing their fish suppliers to consolidate their purchasing. I have friends who WERE in the fancy goldfish business. WalMart's heavy-handed tactics w/distributors resulted in many smaller fish farms going under.

WalMart does their livestock buying just like they do everything else- low bid with a pile of stipulations. Lowest cos often means lowest quality. I have seen a shocking number o deformed fish I. WalMart tanks. Every WM I have ever been to w/fish has had about 10x the fish in those little tanks than there ever should be. 300+ neons in a 10g tank? Hello. 25 male gourami inter same size tank? Dead fish that are often left for the other fish to pick apart for food.

I hope this post doesn't get pulled, as the last time I ratted on WM, I got a warning from an admin and that post deleted.

My mother works at Wal-mart. NOT THE FISH DEPARTMENT as SHE DOESN'T like fish lol. Anyway, most itmes people who deal with the fish or pet department also deals with another department. I highly doubt their main concern is about fish, as they are a retail store, not a pet shop. I do understand that walmart should care better for their fish, maybe by actually hiring a person just for the fish department.... They really should stop selling fish there, and stick to supplies, but they make a ton of money off of fish, and when they die, people buy more, not knowing that the fish are not cared for well at all. The fish are almost always dead. I do know that once the Walmart gets a shipment of fish, a lot of people buy them, mainly because they get the "pick of the litter." I really think they should stop selling bettas for sure because they are unhealthy and dead looking.. but walmart is good for supplies sometimes.
