Common goldfish need much more space than fancy goldfish. The recommended minimum for one of them is 40 gallons, but I think they need more than that. Also, a goldfish would prefer another goldfish to socialise with rather than another species of fish.

Yeah, many advise keeping goldfish only with other goldfish for that and other reasons. However, OP doesn't want another goldfish so I tried to provide other alternatives.

I understand that, I was just trying to explain that although you can put minnows with goldfish, they won't really socialise with each other so the goldfish might still feel lonely.

Common gold fish need bigger tanks than what most people are willing to invest in. They are great for ponds.

One choice the tank mate link doesn't give is Rosy Reds. You see them in the "feeder fish" tanks with your common goldfish. They get about 1.5 to 2 inches long and are active. Like goldfish, they are true cold water fish, meaning they could go in a pond.

No. That common is going to outgrow that tank in no time, if it doesn't die of ammonia poisoning first. Please research goldfish, especially commons.
