looking for good fish/aquarium store in NYC!
And don't include Petco and the likes in your suggestions, please. I'm looking for a place with good supplies (be greata if they were cheap, too!) and knoweldegable staff here in the Big Apple.
Also, any on-line value sites I ought to know about? thanks, fellow New Yorkers. |

Madasa knows a great place; I can't remember the name of it, but hopefully he'll pop into today :)
As for online places, try www.bigalsonline.com

Here's a fellow NYer, albeit Long Island, who thinks his [acronym:c963655d4c="Local Fish Store"]LFS[/acronym:c963655d4c] is pretty good. The fish are generally high quality and the selection is impressive. They won't sell a fish if they're not sure of it's health.
However, for equipment you just can't beat bigalsonline for pricing!!! |

Here I am to save the day!
Yep, the best store I've found in Manhattan is New World Aquarium: http://www.newworldaquarium.net/ They have an excellent fish selection, principally, and knowledgeable staff. Also, driftwood, rocks, tanks, tons of other stuff. If you're really looking to be wowed, make the trip to Hanover, NJ. Go to Hanover Fish, and gawk. They have a spectacular array of fish. Amongst them: electric catfish, electric eels, Australian Blue Lobsters, Flowerhorns, Lungfish, 3-4 species of arrowana, 2 species of crayfish, Sharks, Rays, many many types of puffers, [acronym:3dd2d086f6="Saltwater"]SW[/acronym:3dd2d086f6] banana eels. Even female dwarf gouramis (though they looked on their last legs). They have a whole section, not just a tank, devoted to African Cichlids. At least 10 species of non-commonly-found plecos (I got a Queen Arabesque). Prices may be somewhat steep, but only because of the rarity of the fish. And, you'll probably be able to bargain them down (I got my Queen Arabesque for $25 rather than $30). If you're looking for equipment, though, look no further than www.bigalsonline.com as AlliV mentioned. It's a great great store with amazing prices (Fluval 304 for $75!!). Order a few things, shipping will be cheaper, and you will save tens or hundreds of dollars. I buy my equipment from them only. Hope this has helped.
