recently got a 29 gallon with a Marineland 350B filter - planning on doing gravel and mostly sand bottom - heard they get impeller problems (not sure - just heard it) - is the sand thing a bad idea for this filter?

As much as I like the filter the impeller gets jammed up and breaks easily. I put an aqua tech impeller in it and hasn't broke since.

I've got one on my 29g and love it. It's a planted aquarium with a fluorite substrate. I made a slight slope in the substrate underneath the bottom of my filter. There's probably about 1" space in between. I haven't had any problems with that. I've got some adolescent cories that sometimes hang out underneath. The filter is gentle enough that it doesn't suck them up.

I use these in mine:

Refillable Media Cartridge for Penquin 200B and 350B Filters

Basically you can design your cartridge anyway you like. And given that you've got 4 slots, it can become canister-like.
