I am using a Marineland Canister Filter C220 in my 47 gallon bow front tank which is great, however as I'm cleaning my tank stirring up the excess food it isn't being sucked into the filter. I was wondering if maybe I have too much media in my 4 baskets. I just cleaned the filter I'd say about a month ago. I usually clean it maybe every 2 months. Below is what I have in my baskets:

Lime filter pad
Polyester filter fiber
Micron felt
Bio Balls
Foam Filter
Porous ceramic cylinders

Let me know what you think. I'm rather new to canister filters.

Have a very Merry Christmas. gail

Go with the Flow

I go by the flow rate to judge filter condition. Note how fast it's flowing with a new media load and the water level low enough to see the discharge. After that, it's pretty easy to tell when it's slowing down and starting to clog.
