I just got my Marineland glass top for my 36 inch tank and it's just a hair too big. The tank measures 36 inches long clearly, but the glass top is about 2 millimeters too long, so it doesn't fit down into the tank lip very nicely - one side hangs out.

This is the glass top: Aquarium Lighting: Marineland Glass Aquarium Lighting Canopies

Is there any way I can shave it or something so it fits my tank more perfectly?

If you have a palm sander. Or you can take it to a hardware store. Also make sure it is well snuged into the plastic.

I do have a palm sander. I assume I will want to use fine sandpaper?

Will it ruin the glass in any way? I know I cut the plexiglass part on the back with scissors but the other part of the top is actually strong glass.
