can i get away with using a 100 w heater in a 55 gallon tank? it keeps it at a good temp but it seems like its always on is this safe?

I might get a bigger heater. The longer a piece of equipment has to run (especially a heating element) the more likely it will fail.

My advise is to always run two heater in case of a failure with one. With a 55 gallon I would run either 2 100w or 2 150w.
