milky stuff at the top of the tank?

I had a milky white precipitate at the top of a 265 gallon freshwater tank; does anybody know what it might be? Sulfur maybe?

I did a 100% water change, but I’m wondering what it was and how to avoid it in the future.

Thanks in advance,
Geoff

Move to general discussion, since no fish problems were mentioned. Do you have hard water? Maybe just mineral deposits. Not really a good idea to do 100% changes.

The tank has been running with just plants in it for a few weeks now. I had a lot of dead leaves in it so I’m thinking maybe hydrogen sulfide, but it didn’t smell like eggs. Nitrates maybe?

Could it be a bacterium?

Are you doing a fishless cycle ? What are you using to cycle the tank (a raw cocktail shrimp or straight ammonia ?) Was it just at the very top or a general cloudiness ?
