Mounted light for 55gal Top Fin

I have a 55gal Top Fin aquarium. I was wondering if the lights that mount to the top of the tank would fit it? It seems like all the glass hoods don't fit it, so I figured I'd just skip the cover and just mount some lights. I just don't want to waste my money on them if they won't fit. I'm new to all this, so I'm sure this will be the first of MANY questions!

What kind of lights are you referring to? Some tanks seem to deviate from the standard measurements just slightly. I have an old O'Dell 29g that I've had problems fitting a hood to.
