BTW, in the future, please say something like "getting ready to breed". We keep it all-ages friendly around here!

Back on topic, I dont keep bettas, but an old roomie used to, i recall they made nests frequently, even with no females around.

And if they don't build a nest a good way to prompt a nest is to give him a view of a female.

Not a good idea unless there is a safe haven you can put your female in after the courtship.
The male is the nurser of the Betta fry so they tent to have the motherly instinct.
